Dear Hypnos

Image
I used to listen to a lot of Vocaloid in middle and high school, but dropped off recently. One of the few songs I still come back to is "Dear Hypnos" by EZFG, a song about burnout. Mostly I just like how it sounds, but it's also super impressive that the music video was made from scratch with cotton balls. Even the lyrics are made out of them. While I understand more lyrics than I did in high school, there's still quite a bit that goes over my head. 「目指す」looks like it means "eye finger" from the kanji, but it means "to aim at or try for." 「ならやむなし」was harder to look up because it wasn't in Jisho, my e-dictionary of choice, but I'm pretty sure 「やむなし」means "to have one's hands tied, be unable to do anything." 「なら」is a conditional particle that means "if." 「思い込んでた」is an exciting phrase to learn because we've spent so much time learning ~と思う form. It means "to be convinced of," with 「でた」being a casual form ...

"Fly Away: The Lost Song of Japan" Although the video title is "Fly Away," no one is certain of the real title of this song. Originally circulated on sites like 2chan, the unmarked cassette featuring the song was discovered at a music shop in Akiba during the early '90s. Some have postulated it was a demo song by Yukiko Okada and other famous singers of the time, but none have been confirmed, and audio analyses are inconclusive. Legend has it the song is haunted due to its mysterious appearance and ghostly notes at 0:44 and 1:22. Judging from urban legends like this and movies like The Ring  (1998), ghost stories involving electronics seem to be common in Japan, though I'm not sure why. While I find this song a bit eerie due to its mysterious origin and haunting vocals, it also makes me imagine an outro song for an '80s anime. It has a funk to it similar to "Super Love Lotion" from the Tokimeki Tonight  (1982) soundtrack. There's somethin...
