 みんなさんこんばんは！ This evening, I attended the Japanese tea ceremony, or 茶道, at Bond Hall. I'd heard about the tea ceremony from books and games but had never seen one in person, and it was very meditative to watch Kawamura sensei and Andrea san prepare thin green tea (薄茶). Andrea san was a student who'd learned sadou in the Zen Buddhist style and helped Kawamura demonstrate. Mariko san, one of the Japanese language tutors, assisted both of them. Thin green tea (left) vs. thick green tea (right). I learned the tea ceremony has its origins in Zen Buddhism, and was perfected by a master named Sen no Rikyu. It is traditionally prepared on the floor on a tatami mat, but modern forms of the tea ceremony are often performed on a table and chair after Japan opened its borders to overseas visitors and houses became more westernized. みんな、おかえりなさい。 For my listening homework, I chose the 1989 horror film Sweet Home.  In it, a group of journalists and art restoration specialists visit the Mamiya Mansion to recover a fresco made by its late, reclusive owner. Rumor has it that the mansion is haunted by the ghost of Mamiya's wife, who, driven mad by the death of their child, was compelled to abduct children from other families to give her child playmates in the afterlife. Additionally, this film holds an important place in video game history, as its Famicom adaptation would later serve as the inspiration for Resident Evil  on the PlayStation. スゥイートホーム・ザ・ファミコン Given my love for the Resident Evil series (and horror in general), I needed to see the film for myself. While it's a bit cheesy and dated, the use of practical effects adds so much charm and realism to the film that'd be absent if it were remade using CGI. After the first real week of class, I feel optimistic about Japanese. Everyone is very polite and friendly, and they make progress quickly. I remember struggling to remember hiragana when I began to learn as a twelve year old, yet everyone picks it up almost as if it were nothing. I'm also pleased to see my handwriting is improving. An unfortunate consequence of self-study is that I'd developed many bad habits without a mentor to keep track of my progress, so it took until this year for me to realize I'd been writing some characters such as 「も」 out of order. Me trying to make my kana look like the perfect examples. It may seem strange that this blog is space-themed, and I would agree. My only reason for it is that I like space and science fiction. Cowboy Bebop is my favourite anime, I love the Phantasy Star  series of video games, I've read Dune,  and my boyfriend and I have been playing way too much BallisticNG as of late.  Greetings Earthlings! I chose to study Japanese because I would like to speak to a wider variety of people. Coming from a remote, rural part of the planet has limited me socially, and learning languages is a great way to break out of that shell. Of course, I am also interested in the books, music, and video games produced in Japan.
