Ashes to Ashes - Vocaloid
Since Halloween is coming up, I decided to revisit some creepy Vocaloid songs I loved in middle school. There were so many good ones to choose from, but my favorite was "Ashes to Ashes," produced by Tennen and sung by KAITO. Honestly, this song's still my year-round guilty pleasure. Although it's over-the-top Gothic and I feel a bit cringe in sharing it, its ambience gives me chills. It's moody, creepy, vaguely Steampunk, and I'm fascinated by the lyrics. Phrases like "I dream of brass sheep" make me think this song is about a robot depressed by their immortality, though in the past I've thought it was about a mad inventor or a vampire. I love coming back to ambiguous works like this and seeing how my thoughts have changed. They're like mirrors in the sense that your interpretation of them is more a reflection of yourself than of the art.
Also, I'd be remiss not to mention how much I love playing this song in Project Diva Mega Mix. I've played it on extreme difficulty so many times it's committed to muscle memory, and I'll probably be tapping it on tables until dementia finally tears it from me.
