Another Mind

Another Mind is a full motion video game developed by Squaresoft for the Playstation. Although an English translation was planned, it was ultimately cancelled due to the popularity of FMV games taking a dive in the West. Even if the vast majority of them were a bit cheap, I love these kinds of plodding story-based games, and it's a hobby of mine to track down niche old media.

The story involves a high school girl who wakes up in the hospital to find another consciousness (the player) in her head, with the object of the game being to help her restore her memories by speaking to other characters and exploring the city. While the stakes seem low, there are also a series of mysteries surrounding the accident that put her in the hospital, so choosing the correct dialogue options is key to keeping her out of trouble with bad actors. Additionally, several endings are possible depending on the player's choices, some more optimistic than others.

I tried watching a let's play of the game, and while I could follow some of the dialogue with help from the in-game subtitles, most of the commentary was a bit too fast for me. I could pick up on pieces of phrases such as 「作り方」and 「これは主人公のようだが」but it was rare for me to follow an entire sentence. Also, I felt so proud of myself for understanding the intro sequence between the protagonist and player, only for the nurse at the hospital to bombard me with complicated kanji. At least I could understand 「気分はどうですか。今、先生を呼びましたからね」as a consolation prize. I'd like to give this game a try one day. The main thing tripping me up is my tiny vocabulary, but with a dictionary in hand, I think it'd be doable.
